Hello! My name is Sienna, and I am Carla’s intern. I am writing today because I want to share the story of how we first met.
I have lived in Boulder for the last 4 years and I am familiar with all of the college haunts on Pearl Street. I am a happy hour enthusiast, an avid thrifter, and I have a go-to order at almost every café between 9th and 18th street. However the collection of fine jewelry shops tucked into the historic mall lived on the edge of my consciousness until this past May. On May 2nd, I received a pair of beautiful green tourmaline studs in a glossy black box as a graduation present. That was my first experience with Carla Morrison. My parents had wandered up and down the red brick pavement in search of something unique and they had found Carla’s studio on 10th street. They walked in unsure of what to expect and walked out about an hour or so later with the perfect gift - timeless gold studs that I wear as I write this story.
Four tiny gems - fresh green tourmaline - are arranged in a square on each stud. Bezel set in yellow gold, they resemble clovers - a symbol of luck that my parents did not miss. Delicately marking each center with sparkle is a diamond.
The tourmaline comes from a 6th generation gem dealer named Anette Klein. Based in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, her company Hams Jacob Klein has been cutting stones for decades. The quality and craftsmanship of these gems is compounded by Carla’s creative vision and
technical skill.
After receiving these studs and hearing my parents story buying them, I was intrigued. Having completed a degree in product design, I appreciate the attention to detail and nuance that is required when creating tiny works of art. I wanted to meet the maker behind my gift, and express my gratitude. So a little while after I found myself knocking on Carla’s door. She greeted me with a smile, and instantly recalled the clovers I wore in my ears, sparking a conversation that turned into a working relationship. Et Voila, I am writing this blog post today with the same earrings.
